In a laundry tips Facebook group, Leanne Willis asked: “What’s the best stain remover for heavily soiled white socks?” and immediately got a flood of helpful suggestions from the community. Many shared off-the-shelf stain removers like Vanish and Napisan, while others recommended baking soda crystals.
Some effective tips from the community
“Soak your socks overnight in baking soda crystals, then wash as normal,” shares Claire Lowe. “I wash all my whites this way and people always comment on how white they are.”
“Before washing, rinse your socks with baking soda crystals in the sink,” advises Lucy Harris. “It helps remove dirt better than just washing.”
“Soak the socks in a bowl of cold water to loosen dirt, then wash with soda crystals,” suggests Hazel Kirk. Donna Thornley offers two options: “Use Pink Oxi in the washing machine or soak the socks in soda crystals and wash.”
“Soda crystals are the only thing I’ve tried that works to get my socks sparkling white again,” says Heidi Smith. “Soda crystals and the right temperature. I wash at 90 degrees and it works great,” says Debbie Simmonds.
Why soda crystals are effective
Baking soda crystals are not as strong a bleaching agent as bleach, but they are very effective at removing stains and brightening laundry. Baking soda crystals act as a stain remover and water softener, providing a gentle but effective whitening effect.
Furthermore, using soda crystals when washing not only helps to brighten clothes but also helps to clean your washing machine, remove dirt and bacteria, ensuring no unpleasant odors remain in clothes.
So if you want your socks to shine white again without using harsh detergents, try baking soda crystals for great results that are safe for both your clothes and your washing machine!
